This article proposes a teaching model for the German Mittelfeld and its constituent order, focusing on learners of German as a foreign language with Italian as L1. Drawing on authentic texts, it tackles key learner difficulties through a grammar-aware and text-based approach. A pilot study shows that learners can distinguish complements from adjuncts, assess word order variants, and develop context-sensitive hypotheses on information structure. The findings highlight the importance of raising linguistic awareness to decode the “complex Mittelfeld”.

Abstract

This article proposes a teaching model for the German Mittelfeld and its constituent order, focusing on learners of German as a foreign language with Italian as L1. Drawing on authentic texts, it tackles key learner difficulties through a grammar-aware and text-based approach. A pilot study shows that learners can distinguish complements from adjuncts, assess word order variants, and develop context-sensitive hypotheses on information structure. The findings highlight the importance of raising linguistic awareness to decode the “complex Mittelfeld”.
