The paper investigates the narrative mechanisms related to the ‘restart’ in Euripides, whose tragedies often have happy endings. The ‘restart’, which can be understood as the change from bad to good fortune, takes different forms in tragedy: ‘individual’ if it concerns the individual character, ‘collective’ if it involves the entire polis; ‘successful’ if the change is realized, ‘failed’ if the change remains at the level of mere attempt. Three different types of restart can be identified in the lost dramas: the restart following prophecies and oracles; the restart coinciding with the liberation and salvation of one or more characters; and, finally, the restart leading to the founding of a city. A peculiar case is represented by Phrixus A and B, examined here, in which multiple types of restart coexist.
