Abstract

The work of architect and designer Neri Oxman is a good example of the frontiers and the abstractions of contemporary eco-design. In the first part of this article, I explore the method and the theoretical orientations on which Oxman and her group, the Mediated Matter Research Lab at MIT, base their poietic praxis, within a sort of “acting according to nature” post-Romantic utopia. The second part of the article focuses on the wearable devices designed by Oxman, and notably on the Wanderers series, inspired by a vision of human life on other planets. The last paragraph further examines the tropes of “derma” and “domus” to underline the most sublimated and less conscious aspects of Oxman’s work, in the light of other poetics of wearable devices that are capable of a higher degree of reflection on the role of design in contemporary societies.
