Political Parties in the Constitutional Transition: From the Fall of Fascism to the Democratic Republic (1943-1948). In this essay, the author retraces the main historical and institutional transitions from the fall of Fascism to the approval of the Italian Constitution and the beginning of the Italian Republic. She highlights, on the one hand, the fundamental role of anti-fascist political parties, which re-emerged after the regime’s collapse, as the creators and builders of Italy’s new democratic-constitutional order during the five-year provisional constitutional period. On the other hand, she notes the emergence, during this dramatic historical period, of certain traits that would long characterize the Italian political and party system, with the central role of mass parties and the consolidation of the practice of coalition governments.
