The present paper investigates the hypothesis of Euripides’ Phrixus I, transmitted by P. Oxy. 52, 3652 and P. Oxy. 27, 2455, offering new proposals for integration and conjectures aimed at reconstructing the text based on a new examination of the papyri. This contribution proposes a new interpretation of the role played by Athamas within the tragic plot, which aligns with the mythical version documented by Herodotus VII 197, behind which the motif of a second homonymous drama by Euripides may be concealed.

Abstract

The present paper investigates the hypothesis of Euripides’ Phrixus I, transmitted by P. Oxy. 52, 3652 and P. Oxy. 27, 2455, offering new proposals for integration and conjectures aimed at reconstructing the text based on a new examination of the papyri. This contribution proposes a new interpretation of the role played by Athamas within the tragic plot, which aligns with the mythical version documented by Herodotus VII 197, behind which the motif of a second homonymous drama by Euripides may be concealed.
