This article deals with a passage in Procopius of Gaza’s Epistle 19 Garzya-Loenertz. It argues that Procopius is imitating an expression used by the 5th-century BCE Attic comic poet Cratinus, which he knows via Phrynichus Arabius’ Praeparatio sophistica. This parallel in the Praeparatio sophistica may also allow us to improve the text of Procopius’ difficult passage.

Abstract
This article deals with a passage in Procopius of Gaza’s Epistle 19 Garzya-Loenertz. It argues that Procopius is imitating an expression used by the 5th-century BCE Attic comic poet Cratinus, which he knows via Phrynichus Arabius’ Praeparatio sophistica. This parallel in the Praeparatio sophistica may also allow us to improve the text of Procopius’ difficult passage.File in questo prodotto:
