Abstract

The background of the essay is the important function that the grammaticus school had in the imperial age and the late antiquity in the education of a class of imperial officials who were required to have an excellent knowledge of Latin both as a language and as a literature. Reading, paraphrasing, linguistic analysis and commentary on authors, especially poets, were the tools for acquiring this competence. The analysis of Lucan’s scholia on two passages shows the problems commentators faced and how, from late antiquity to the Middle Ages, some classical structures of Latin language had become difficult for readers to understand and reconstruct, such as the double negation nec not with the value of affirmation, or were in need of recall by part of the grammarian to a use deemed appropriate, such as the dative of possession.
